“We’re interested in an all-inclusive resort!”
Oh, are you, though? As a travel advisor, this might be one of the most common statements I hear, and for some travelers (and destinations), it’s the wrong call.
If you’re wondering whether an all-inclusive is right for you, the short answer is: it depends!
And I don’t mean that as a cop-out. All-inclusives are perfect for some travelers and a total mismatch for others. So instead of a blanket yes or no, here are 5 factors to help you figure out if it’s the right move for your next trip.
DESTINATION FIT
✅ Makes Sense: Mexico and many Caribbean islands? Then yes, because all-inclusives are the norm here — plentiful, well-developed, and available at nearly every price point and for a wide variety of travelers.
❌ Doesn’t Make Sense: Destinations like Hawaii, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands. A lot of travelers assume these destinations are packed with all-inclusive options. They’re not! And where they may exist (in limited, not-quite-true-all-inclusive-fashion), they’re not the vibe. These are places where the trip happens off the resort, and you’d be missing the whole point of the destination by staying at an all-inclusive.
DECISION MAKING
✅ Makes Sense: Travelers who want to make zero decisions. You show up, drop your bags, and let everything be handled. What’s for dinner? Something from one of many on-property restaurants. Where’s the pool? Right there! The point is pure decompression, not daily decision-making.
❌ Doesn’t Make Sense: If you’d rather wander down a street, find the hole-in-the-wall spot the locals love, and figure it out as you go, an all-inclusive mightfeel like a cage. The best part of your trip will be off the resort.
THE FOODIE TRAVELER
✅ Makes Sense: If variety and volume without having to think about it is the priority, all-inclusive is the way to go. Most quality all-inclusives offer multiple restaurants, themed nights, and enough options to keep you satisfied all week with no hunger and no stress over the bill.
❌ Doesn’t Make Sense: Serious foodies who live for authentic, local dining will likely find resort food underwhelming. The best meals of your life are rarely served buffet-style. Exceptions exist if you’re truly married to the all-inclusive life, but we can chat about that.
YOUR TRAVEL PARTY
✅ Makes Sense: When the goal is everyone being together without anyone having to coordinate logistics, an all-inclusive should be considered. Multi-generational family trips, reunions, milestone celebrations with a crowd — everyone shows up, picks their own pace, and reconvenes at dinner. Nobody’s in charge of herding cats across a city.
❌ Doesn’t Make Sense: One person wants to hike, another wants to sleep until noon, and someone else wants to visit a coffee farm. A property can hold a group together physically, but it can’t reconcile five different definitions of a good trip. You’d be better off with a home base and the freedom to split off.
BUDGETING
✅ Makes Sense: For travelers who want to know exactly what they’re spending before they go, this one is for you. No mental math at dinner, no surprise bar tabs at checkout. For many people, that predictability is worth every penny, and it genuinely can be a great value if you take advantage of what’s included.
❌ Doesn’t Make Sense: Light spenders may not feel the financial benefits here. If you don’t drink alcohol, eat modest meals, and generally travel conservatively, you may actually spend less booking à la carte. You’d be paying for an open bar you never touch and a late-night buffet you skip every night. In that case, the math just doesn’t work in your favor.
Shira ‘s Tip: Count up your answers. Landed mostly on one side? You’ve got your answer. Landed somewhere in the middle? That’s exactly what I’m here to help sort out. There’s a caveat to almost every rule, and the right call depends on your personal travel needs. Let’s figure out whether an all-inclusive (or something else entirely 👀) is the move for your next trip.
FAVORITE ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORTS
If you’ve landed on “yes, all-inclusive,” here are some properties we love and book often — across styles and budgets.
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana | Cap Cana, Dominican Republic
BEST FOR: UPSCALE MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILY TRIPS
A polished, family-friendly property on one of the Dominican Republic’s best beaches, with a full kids’ club, water park-style pool, and enough dining variety to keep a big group happy without ever feeling like you’re compromising on quality.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya | Riviera Maya, Mexico
BEST FOR: ULTRA-LUXURY, SPECIAL OCCASIONS
One of the most elevated all-inclusives in Mexico, with tiered “ambassador” and “grand class” sections, chef-driven restaurants, and a spa that’s a destination in itself. This is the pick when the trip itself is the celebration — milestone birthdays, anniversaries, babymoons.
Hotel Xcaret Mexico | Riviera Maya, Mexico
BEST FOR: ADVENTURE-LOVING FAMILIES
Billed as “all-fun inclusive,” rates here include unlimited access to the Xcaret family of parks — think eco-parks, water parks, and cultural shows — so families get resort ease and a packed activity roster without paying for tickets separately.
Atelier Playa Mujeres | Playa Mujeres, Mexico
BEST FOR: QUIET LUXURY, SWIM-OUT SUITES
Adult-only resort located north of the Cancun hotel zone and noticeably calmer for it. Every room is a suite, many with direct swim-out access to the pool, and the vibe leans quiet and upscale rather than lively.
Beaches Turks & Caicos | Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
BEST FOR: FAMILIES WHO WANT IT ALL INCLUDED
The gold standard for family all-inclusives: a full water park, Sesame Street characters and programming, unlimited scuba for certified divers, and villa-style suites with full kitchens for larger family groups. Turks & Caicos’ gorgeous beach doesn’t hurt either.
Divi & Tamarijn Aruba | Aruba
BEST FOR: LAID-BACK, BUDGET-FRIENDLY BEACH TIME
Two sister resorts on the same stretch of beach, connected by a free shuttle, so guests can use both properties’ restaurants and pools. Simple, relaxed, and a great fit for travelers who want reliable all-inclusive value without a lot of frills — and Aruba’s low humidity and rare hurricane risk make it an easy year-round pick.
Secrets Cap Cana | Cap Cana, Dominican Republic
BEST FOR: ADULTS-ONLY ROMANCE & ANNIVERSARIES
An adults-only property with a swim-up suite category that’s become a signature request, plus a strong lineup of specialty restaurants and a genuinely relaxed, quiet-luxury feel. A go-to recommendation for honeymoons and couples’ getaways.
Sandals Grande St. Lucia | Gros Islet, St. Lucia
BEST FOR: COUPLES WANTING DRAMATIC SCENERY
Perched on a peninsula with water on three sides and views toward St. Lucia’s famous Pitons in the distance, this adults-only property pairs Sandals’ signature swim-up rooms and included excursions with some of the most photogenic scenery in the Caribbean.
Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres | Costa Mujeres, Mexico
BEST FOR: FLEXIBILITY — FAMILIES AND COUPLES TOGETHER
A newer, north-of-Cancun property with distinct family and adults-only sections sharing one resort, so multigenerational groups can book together and still get an age-appropriate experience. Strong value for the level of finish and beach quality.
Shira’s Tip: Every one of these books differently depending on room category, travel dates, and what’s included. Let’s schedule a call to talk about what you are looking for, and I’ll pull together options that actually fit — not just what’s popular.
